Recipe FAQ

What gives the bites their fudgy texture?

The combination of unsweetened cocoa powder, vegetable oil, and buttermilk results in a moist and fudgy texture.

Can I substitute any mix-ins?

Yes, dried fruit, crushed cookies, or toffee bits can replace or supplement the mix-ins for variety.

How do I prevent the bites from becoming dry?

Be careful not to overmix the batter and bake only until a toothpick shows moist crumbs, about 18–22 minutes.

Are these bites suitable for a gluten-free diet?

Substituting the flour and pretzels with gluten-free alternatives makes these bites gluten-free friendly.

What is the purpose of folding in mix-ins gently?

Gently folding prevents overmixing, preserving a tender crumb and evenly distributing the mix-ins without crushing them.

Can I prepare these bites ahead of time?

Yes, they can be baked in advance and stored in an airtight container for several days, maintaining freshness.
